Wooden seats and pews, with seating capacity of easily 800 members(???).

A lovely church.”

If you dont register, dont bother coming. No ‘walk-ins’ as you have to register via their registration form provided in their Facebook account. Above all that, this is the only reason i love St Joseph. You cannot simply enter the church without registering yourself. Mass are pleasantly great.”

In 1886, the missionary came to Malaysia and lived in Johor Bahru for a couple of years. He then went back to England and spent the rest of his life serving the Lord.

Through his time in JB, Cook was able to set up the church at the then Sultan Abu Bakar.

The church was established in 1933. It used to have 2 services on Sundays.

This is because there were a large number of Chinese people in the area who used the Teochew language.

The old church building was constructed using timber and is used as the Youth Hall. It was originally used as a Chinese worship space.

The English session would then move to Hillville. It would continue to play a vital role in the development of Christians in the region.

According to their homepage, the church’s mission is “to develop people to become fully devoted Spirit-filled followers of Jesus Christ.”

Another ministry they have is the Children’s ministry, which is divided into (1) children’s hour for ages 3 to 6 years old and (2) Bible School for ages 7 to 12 years old. The children ministry meets on every Saturday from 4.00pm to 5.30pm concurrently with the main church worship service. To encourage parents-children bolding, every first Saturday of the month (or last Saturday of the month if Sunday falls on the following month), the children will worship together with their parents at the main church worship service before going for the children classes. The children’s ministry meets every Saturday at 4.00pm and 5.30pm, and it is held in the same place as the main church worship service (except Sundays). Each month, children will attend the main church worship service with their parents. This will encourage them to bond with their parents.

They have a fun-loving, caring, biblical-knowledgeable and dedicated group of teachers to excite and nurture the children. All churchgoer-parents are encouraged to have their children join the church’s children ministry. These are just some of the many active ministries they foster at this church.

Here’s what Lee Chye Ewe thought about their last visit to this church: “Started as a church with a single building then a multi-purpose hall was added. A canteen was also established. A kindergarten was then started and later an international school was built within the same compound. They also bought up surrounding houses for their activities or serves as quarters for teachers and students.

As it is within a small housing area but its activities draws a lot of people here, causing some problem to the residents here. Many speed traps have been built around the housing area to avoid speeding cars. However that also caused the existing roads get damaged easily.”

The parishioners of this area and other Catholics in the surrounding areas worked together to build this Chapel. It was officially opened on December 27, 1987.

FINAL THOUGHTS

One of the many struggles of OFWs and overseas Filipinos is finding a community, where they can truly feel like they belong. Having a good workplace is different from finding a reliable and nourishing community. A community can stand in for you family throughout the period you will be away from your family back home. And one good way to find a loving community is by attending a church. Most churches are open and ready to accept newcomers, not only for the sake of increasing their membership, but also to extend help and guide other people to grow spiritually.

As you know, everyone has problems. But not everyone can face them head-on. This becomes doubly difficult for those based overseas because their connections can be too few and limited. Connecting with a church somewhat addresses this dilemma. This guide aims to provide information to Filipinos, particularly those based in Malaysia to connect with a community, such as a church – since we know that most Filipinos are exposed to the Christian faith. That being said, if you know anyone who might be looking for a church to attend, make sure to share this guide with them.
